We publish contributions from people who use a tool seriously and can explain it to someone who does not. Developers, operations people, creators, founders, support engineers and technical writers are all welcome. You do not need a writing background. You do need to know your subject from the inside and be willing to show your working.
What we are looking for
The pieces that work best for us explain one thing well. How a category of tool works. How to set something up properly, step by step. How to choose between options for a specific kind of user. What a term actually means and where it is misused. Each piece should fit one of our six sections: Founders Tech, Creators Tech, Business Tech, Workers Tech, Devs Tech and Consumer Tech.
The question every editor here will ask you is a simple one: how would a reader check this? If your piece tells people to change a setting, it should tell them how to confirm the change worked. If it recommends a tool, it should explain the criteria, not just the verdict.
What we will not publish
- Product announcements, press releases or rewritten marketing copy.
- Pieces written to promote a product you sell or are paid to promote.
- Rankings without stated criteria.
- News, rumors and anything that will be out of date within a month.
- Articles about games.
How to pitch
Send a short email to [email protected] with the subject line “Pitch”. Include:
- The working title and the section it belongs to.
- Three or four sentences on what the reader will be able to do after reading it.
- A rough outline of the main sections.
- One or two lines on why you know this subject well.
- Links to anything you have written before, if you have them.
Please do not send finished drafts first. A pitch lets the editor shape the piece with you before you spend days on it. We aim to reply to every pitch we can use within two weeks.
How editing works
If we accept your pitch, the section editor will agree a brief with you: length, structure and the points to check. Your draft will be edited for clarity, accuracy and our house style, which is American English and plain language. Every fact that can change is checked against its source, and you may be asked to support a claim or cut it. You will see the edited version before it is published.
Links in contributed articles are chosen for the reader. Editors approve every link, and we remove anything that exists to promote rather than to inform. Contributors are named on the article and have a page on the site.
Before you write, please read our Editorial Standards. They apply to contributors exactly as they apply to our own editors.
