GM Chevrolet announced in-car AppShop and OnStar 4G LTE connection

General Motors announced at CES press conference that will be bringing OnStar 4G LTE internet and apps directly to its 2015 Chevrolet car dashboard.

A slew of Chevy vehicles in 2015 will be featuring the Chevrolet AppShop, which could come with music, travel apps and podcast for in-car use. The company also launched the in-car 4G LTE connections partnering with AT&T, where customers can add the car as additional device on any MobileShare plan or they could also choose any other plan to download applications and also useful for vehicle diagnostics. These cars will also come with inbuilt mobile hotspot to share the 4G LTE connection to other devices such as smartphones and tablets and vise versa.

The Chevrolet AppShop will be launching with some important free apps such as music apps (iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Kaliki etc) hotel booking apps (Priceline.com), weather apps such as Weather Channel for visual and audio updates, seeker apps such as Cityseeker & Eventseeker and location sharing apps such as Glympse. GM also expects to get more apps to its AppShop by more developers for in-vehicle use.

General Motors’ Chevrolet Equinox, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Spark, Spark EV, Corvette, Silverado and Silverado HD will be equipped with these new technology along with the standardized AppShop in 2015. The company also said that the existing or cars bought in 2014 won’t be getting the AppShop support or can’t be upgraded in future too. But GM’s Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands also likely to get the similar technology soon.
