Low-fat diet helps in cutting excessive weight than low-carb diet, study finds

A new study has found that a low-fat diet is effective in weight loss over a long-term. The study finds that a low-carb diet is not necessary for long-term weight loss, but a nutritious diet is an effective way to cut excessive weight.low-fat-low-carb-diet

The study, published in an article in Cell Metabolism was led by Kevin Hall from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). He  collected huge amounts of data from low-fat versus low-carb diet from 19 participants who lived in the “metabolic ward.” Hall and his team exercised control over what they consumed.

All the participants were obese and followed a balanced diet, and half of the participants reduced their calories by 30 percent by either following a low-carb or low-fat diet. Hall said in a statement:

“All those things do happen with carb reduction and you do lose body fat, but not as much when you cut out the fat. All calories weren’t exactly equal when it came to losing body fat… but they were pretty close.”

When fewer carbs are consumed, it leads to a drop in insulin levels and fat is released from the body reserves. This study found that the same process occurs at a greater rate when fats  are cut off from diet. Researchers analyzed the chemical composition of the participants, and came to the conclusion that eliminating fats had the greatest impact on weight loss. During the study, participants in the low-fat dies lost 463 grams of fat on average, when compared to the 245 grams lost on the low-carb diet.

The authors said that reducing fat can lead to 80 percent more weight loss than cutting out carbs. However, they added that a smart diet is an important factor in weight loss. People are likely to see more positive results in the real world than in the lab as they could follow a more rigorous weight loss regimen along with a low-fat diet.
