Comcast will be updating its mobile app with a rebranded name as Xfinity TV Go, which will stream 35 TV channels to its subscribers, starting with News, Sports and Children program channels. (Rebranding could help overcome the poor ratings on app markets for its previous app, check end of the article)
Comcast, US’s largest cable operator is updating its both Android and iOS app and with WiFi connection, its subscribers can watch all these 35 channels on the go. Prior to this, the company only allowed subscribers to watch live TV only on special occasions such as previous London Olympics and only via its website from a computer browser. The update will be rolled out in coming days as the TRP provider The Nielsen Co. revealed its plans to integrate TV ratings with mobile viewing in coming months.
Matthew Strauss, Comcast’s senior vice president of digital and emerging platforms, Matthew Strauss said,
“There’s a high penetration of these devices, customers are more comfortable watching on mobile and we’re comfortable Nielsen now has the mechanism in the next few months to be able to measure this.”
Till date, the live TV channels on mobile phones were limited because of the rights issues from the content owners as mobile viewing wasn’t incorporated with TV ratings by firms like Neilsen and they refused to grand access in worry of losing advertising revenue after shifting to such platforms. Now, it would be the best time to launch as the mobile ratings is not far away.
The full list of launch channels for live streaming through Xfinity TV Go focuses on news, sports, and children’s programming, including BBC World News, beIN Sport, beIN Sport Español, Big Ten Network, CNBC, CNN, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN 3, ESPN Deportes, ESPN News, ESPNU, FOX Business Channel, FOX News Channel, FOX Sports 1, FX, FXX, Golf Channel, HLN, MSNBC, Nat Geo, Nat Geo Wild, NBC Sports Network, Pac-12 and its six regional networks, and Willow TV. More channels are expected in the future. So far, its Xfinity TV android app has got many negative feedback with 3 stars rating from 13,480 users. Lets hope for the better ratings after the rebrand and the update.
