Samsung Gear S is set to release in US markets by fall and will be available through leading carriers like AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint. The company stated that it would release more information, including pricing “is coming soon”.
The standalone smartwatch was unveiled at the IFA 2014 event can make calls and receive notifications with connecting it to a smartphone. The Curved Gear S features a heart monitor, pedometer, UV sensor and several fitness applications. AT&T will launch the devices in its stores from Sep 26 but the release date and pricing have not been announced. The device offers 3G connectivity and built-in microphone for voice commands.
The Gear S smartwatch run own the company’s own Tizen OS and will feature a catalog of more than 1000 apps during the launch. Samsung’s Health S app compiles biometric information throughout the day from the band while the Nike+ app is aimed at runners. The device is powered by a 300mAh battery that will provide two days’ backup and the power on/off button is located below the display.
The smartwatch can almost offer the basic functions of a smartphone after inserting a SIM card. The wearable device features a Super AMOLED 2-inch display with 360×480 resolution, powered by dual-core 1GHz processor with 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. Samsung’s first smartwatch is likely to attract users as it can function as a standalone wearable device. With a range of smartwatches in the market, including the newly released Apple Watch which requires iOS for tethering, the Gear S will provide tough competition.
