Samsung unveils Galaxy Note Edge with 5.6-inch display with a curved edge

Samsung announced the new Galaxy Note Edge phablet with a 5.6-inch display screen along with a unique curved edge side-display at the IFA 2014 electronics show in Berlin on Wednesday.samsung-galaxy-note-edge

The Note Edge is powered by a 2.7GHz Quad-Core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 805/Exynos 5433) with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a MicroSD slot. It features a 16MP primary camera (3456 x 4608 pixels with OIS) and 3.7MP secondary camera. The device will also come with a 1.9GHz octa-core processor in some markets and will be powered by the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.

Other key specifications are, as we said already, a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED display with an incredible resolution of 1600×2560 pixels with the density of 526ppi, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, Adreno 420 GPU for Snapdragon version and Mali-T760 GPU for Exynos version, and a 3,000mAh battery.

Menu icons and text messages will be displayed on the curved screen that uses hardened glass and can function separately when the main display is turned off. The curved area can also be turned on separately, which will primarily display notifications. Samsung has moved the app dock to the curved screen in the tablet from the home screen. Samsung has not revealed more details about the glass.

“On the right side of the Galaxy Note Edge, you can see a concave metal frame, when the device falls to the ground, the device is manufactured to hit the metal frame first,” said Kim Gae-youn senior executive of Samsung’s wireless division.

Samsung is expected to launch the device only in select markets and will be priced at one million won ($982) in Korea, which is a premium price due to the cost of production and limited stock. Samsung has not commented on the exact prices of the two phablet variants. AT&T and T-Mobile will launch the Samsung Note 4 and Note Edge in the US. The Note 4 will be available in October while the Note Edge will be released by year-end.
