Android and iOS dominate smartphone market share in Q2 2014

According to a new research report from analysts, Android and iOS dominate the smartphone market share with combined share of 96.4 percent, while Microsoft’s Windows Phone mobile OS declined by 3.4 percent.smartphone-market-share

Earlier in the second quarter, the combined share of Android and iOS was 92.6 percent and Windows phone has only 2.5 percent of market share, according to IDC data. The low market share of Windows is due to the drop in shipments by 9 percent. Blackberry saw a major fall in the market share from 2.8 to 0.5 percent.

Ramon Llamas, research manager at IDC’s mobile phone team said in a statement:

“With many of its OEM partners focusing on the sub -$200 segments, Android has been reaping huge gains in the emerging market.”

Google’s Android operating system had a dominant share in the global smartphones priced under $200 while iOS had 84.7 market share through high-end smartphones. Microsoft had suffered the most as the company seeks to focus more on its operating system and the reduction of licensing costs did not help in the smart phone sales.

Blackberry’s shipment decline to 1.9 percent from 2.8 is mainly due to the lack of major apps that can be seen in iOS and Android and the involvement of third-party developers to develop apps. The lack of apps offer by the market leaders is the main reason for the decline of Blackberry.

Microsoft had shipped 7.4 million devices in the second quarter and has declined from the previous year’s shipments of 8.2 million. Android devices are leading in shipments with 255.3 million units, while Apple shipped 35.2 million iPhones. IDC added that smartphones below $200 were the reason for Android holding 58.6 market share. Upcoming operating systems like Samsung’s Tizen OS and Intel OS are yet to take off.
