Many believe that the days of compact cameras are long gone, with the innovations we have seen in mobile cameras. But Samsung, like it always does, is trying to surprise us with their latest Galaxy K Zoom. Last year we saw a similar attempt from Samsung when they launched their Galaxy S4 Zoom. Like a sequel to a successful movie, this year they have come out with the Galaxy K Zoom, an attempt to give credit to a dedicated camera phones.
The South Korean company, with the launch of this device aims to take the services of a phone-camera device to a new level. So let us take a look at what the company has to offer its camera enthusiast users.
It feels heavy!
Physically, Samsung Galaxy K Zoom feels heavier. The device is practically made with just one idea in mind, a smartphone with a proper camera lens. So as expected, the lens causes the phone to weigh more. It looks like any other smartphone from Samsung from the front. But the back houses the real deal. The camera lens sticks out from behind, adding to the bulkiness behind. The phone weighs 200g. It is 16.6mm thick across and 20.2mm thick at its widest point which houses the camera optics.
The phone’s processor is a Hexa-core Samsung Exynos 5, which packs a couple of high-performance 1.75GHz A15 cores along with four high-efficiency 1.3GHz A7 cores. Galaxy K Zoom has NFC and 4G and packs a 2GB RAM. The phone supports up to 64 GB external storage. IT RUNS ON Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Although this isn’t the best modern smartphone out there in the market, it neatly runs most of the games and performance is acceptable up to a level.
The device has a 4.8-inch screen and uses a Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 720p. Samsung made PenTile-type OLED screen for Galaxy K Zoom which makes even 720p look a bit fuzzier. Nevertheless, it offers clear, sharp and bright display.
Here comes the highlight!
The 20.7MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensors are possibly the best ones around and this is the feature that Samsung expects to make this phone sell itself. The camera has 10x optical zoom. It also has Optical Image Stabilization along with a Xenon Flash. The phone’s camera provides a focal length of 24-240mm and an aperture range of f3.1-6.3. It is quite handy for a beginner’s level photography.

Buy this phone if you consider the 10x optical zoom is quite necessary. Despite the camera needs, the phone gives a reasonably good battery life. But before you purchase this device you should know that it is a heavy phone and the weight distribution isn’t uniform. It is priced at $480. It may also be a tad overpriced. This phone is for people who don’t want to carry around their digital camera all the time.
