Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has announced that it will begin to sell its beta “Explorer” version of Google Glass wearable eye gear in UK, for the first time and the company will be hosting a two-day demo event at 9-10 Stable Street, London on June 27-28.
Google Glass will be sold at £1,000 in United Kingdom, for people of age 18 and up. If you calculate and convert British Pounds to US Dollars, the price tag will become $1700, which is $200 more than what the device is being sold in United States.
Google announced the news through its official Google+ page,
Beginning today, we’re extending our open beta Explorer program to the UK. The world sees the UK as a center (actually, a centre) of innovation. It has produced some of the greatest technology inventors and inventions of the last century, and people on the ground are always excited to explore new products and ideas.
Google has already setup an official webpage for UK users, where it provides all the information for its Glass enthusiasts. As of now, Google hasn’t revealed any special features for UK Explorers, as many of you might think about the extra $200 charged by the search giant. However, Google has blended its head mounted wearable to cope up with UK accents for voice commands. The metrics are also changed to what UK uses. An example; Fahrenheit has been replaced by Celsius.
Google also looks for UK developers to develop applications that relates to the local places, maps and more. You could also expect a specialized local mapping apps on Google Glass made for UK. Meanwhile in US, almost every large social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Google’s email Gmail, popular news websites, mini games and other apps have entered the Glass platform already, and these applications could also come to the new continent too. We can expect some Glass software sessions at Google’s I/O developers conference, to be held in San Francisco on June 25-26.
Google has begun its journey to conquer the world of wearable market through Google Glass, but the device still not publicly available for sale in US. Every time it planned to sell the device in US, it brings up with limited number of devices.
In US, Google tried to change the way the society initially welcomed the Glass, it wanted the Glass to be welcomed by open arms. The company has faced many disputes related to the Google Glass and its users’ behaviors, such as wearing while driving and the restaurant drama. Concerned over the social acceptance, Google has published an etiquette guide for Google Glass explorers that optionally requests users to follow some do’s and don’ts. We hope the same guide will apply to its new market too.
It’s still unclear whether the company will launch the prescription glass with new styles and designs for its head mounted wearable. In US, Google launched feather-lite titanium material to craft the prescription glass frames with classy design with the introduction of four styles initially – Curve, Split, Bold and Thin.
