Foursquare splits ‘check-in’ to new Swarm app, focuses on discovery in core app

Foursquare has decided to split its app into two separate apps and named the new one as “Swarm,” by which, users can check in to locations and see what their nearby friends are up to, while the core app will focus on discovery.

Foursquare has enabled the users to “check-in” to the locations in 2009 and since its inception, it has seen tremendous growth in its user-base and collection of user data as well. Recently, the company has also began rolling out the discovery kind of its service too. Once the new app comes out as public, Fourquare users won’t be able to do everything within its core app. Some of the features will be split to the new Swarm app.

According to Foursquare, checking in with Swarm app will be faster and easier than its core app, Foursquare. Initially, Swarm app will be available for all iOS and Android devices since “later this summer.” Windows Phone version of the application will be launched in coming weeks.

Hence forth, Foursquare app will be focusing on discovery aspect of features, where Swarm will be taking the burden of checking in to locations. Foursquare’s main app will try to take on Yelp, with learning ability of the places the users have been, where users could post reviews of local places and the app will help the users by suggesting new stores and restaurants with the help of those reviews by other users.

Foursqaure always used to say that their core agenda is not to provide check-in services for its users, but the app became popular in that segment. Foursquare says that the interesting move of splitting the app into two will make the separate check-in and discovery process quicker than integrated feature in currently available in Foursquare app.

The company stated in its blog post:

Swarm is for people who want the fastest and easiest way to connect with their friends. Foursquare is for explorers who want to know about the best spots, and to share what they’ve found with others. The two apps have been built to work seamlessly together and we can’t wait until both apps are in your hands.

Do you use Foursquare app? If your answer is yes, which feature you like most within the app – check-in or discovery?
