Microsoft is now Apple of US considering its Xbox One sales in December last year, which leads the gaming console market in United States.
We compared Microsoft to Apple because, latter one is still the number one smartphone maker in US beating Samsung, but Samsung is the largest manufacturer worldwide. Similarly, Sony is in second place in US, while it leads the global gaming console market.
According to the report by NPD Group, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release helped increase the December sales to jump over 50% than the same period of 2012. Microsoft has sold total of 908,000 Xbox One units in December 2013. Although Sony released PlayStation 4 a week before Microsoft’s Xbox launch, it was hindered by supply and the number of countries it reached in first attempt. Both the companies were announced their 1 million sales in its first day sales. Sony responded to the NPD’s report and said, “We sold every PS4 available at retail in the U.S. and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand.”
But Microsoft also revealed the sales figure of its Xbox 360 gaming device, which sees a 643,000 sales in December 2013. Now, Xbox 360 is accounted for 46% market share of the gaming hardware market in U.S. with 10% year-on-year growth from December 2012.
Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business for Xbox said in a statement at Xbox Wire,
“We’re grateful for the excitement and support of our fans – many purchasing their next Xbox console and many joining the Xbox family for the first time. Our journey is just starting, with more innovation, games and entertainment coming in 2014 and far beyond.”
The report also revealed that the overall video game sales in U.S. has grown only 2% year-on-year from December 2012’s $3.21 billion to December 2013’s $3.28 billion, in which, the console share was $1.07 billion in Dec ’12 and $1.37 billion in Dec ’13 (28% increase).
