Apple on Tuesday announced that it had generated more than $10 million through app sales last year with developers earning $15 billion from the app store.
Apple has raked in $3 billion as revenue mainly due to the success of its iPhone and iPad. Apart from the $91 billion earned by the company in September, app sales also play a role in the revenue. Apple mentioned that the app store saw its highest sales dutring the moth of December by generating $1 billion from downloads. Developers have also earned $15 billion in total since 2008.
Though Apple in 2007 led by the late Steve Jobs was hesitant to allow outside developers, the scenario changed a year later which started a new type of software development. However growing competition from Google has caused the entry of apps into Android which was exclusively released only for iOS during the early years.
Apple added that sales in 2013 were mainly attributed to apps like ProtoGeo Oy’s Moves Calorie counter, Simon Filip’s Afterlight image editor and popular games like Candy Crush Saga, Minecraft and others.
Eddy Cue, Apple senior VP said “We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the app store.” The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014, he added.
Currently Apple’s app store has over one million apps in various categories like business, news, games, books and more for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
