Facebook is losing users to other social media platforms at record speeds. According to a recent report, the company lost 2.8 million users aged 25 or younger in 2017 alone.
So, no wonder its tactics to win users back seem a bit desperate. For instance, inactive users that have given the website their personal phone numbers in hopes that a more secure two-step authentication system would keep their accounts safe, complained Facebook is using the system to spam them with useless notification messages on their phones.
Also, the more time a user spends away from their Facebook account, the more likely that user will be flooded with spam-texts on their smartphone to get back. Some people said that they created an account on Facebook for their professional profiles and haven’t used the secondary account in months. Yet, this has cost them dearly, as they receive as much as six messages from Facebook on their phones to log back.
One such notification prompts users to click a button to log in, but it also advises them to let Facebook know if they weren’t trying to log in. Inactive users have been receiving similar spam messages for months.
Users Being Put Off By Facebook’s Tactics
What’s more, some users get updates on irrelevant content like the posts of their exes or of “friends” they barely know. But the strategy had the opposite effect: more users have one more reason to stay away from the obnoxious platform.
Also, Facebook may be hemorrhaging younger users because its algorithms have routinely failed to properly identify relevant content for some users and prioritize updates. This means that many users get flooded with info they don’t want or need, and this time it is happening via their phones as well.
Some former users expressed frustration that they have been duped into submitting their phone number with the promise of account safety, when the security tool that was supposed to keep malicious actors at bay has turned into a malicious actor itself.
