Recently, Qualcomm Technologies has revealed its new Snapdragon 636 mobile platform which will supposedly bring many improvements, especially regarding gaming, performance and display. Actually, this new mobile platform was officially announced on Tuesday, at the 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong. It’s interesting that according to Kedar Kondap, the vice president of Product Management, this one will use the Qualcomm Kryo 260 CPU. This means that it’s going to bring about 40% more device performance when compared with the previous version, the Snapdragon 630.

The new mobile platform will see a much-increased browsing and gaming performance, along with an improved display. As for the modem, it will feature the Snapdragon X12 4G LTE. According to Qualcomm, this will allow a peak download speed of about 600Mps. It will also be compatible with previous versions of the mobile platform. So, it will be easy for manufacturers to add the new version to their products.

Moreover, the company has also revealed that it will come with the 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP. This will make it possible for it to capture about 24 megapixels without any lag whatsoever and with the smooth zoom feature. The quality of the image will be lifelike, while the autofocus will be extremely fast. Thanks to a new codec, the audio capacity will also be Hi-Fi.

It’s interesting that this new release follows the releases of the previous versions of the platform, the 660 and 630, back in May. The Snapdragon 636 will begin shipping next month. This change of plans for Qualcomm began back in March, when the company said that the Snapdragon brand will only be meant for premium processors. At the same time, it will also keep the Qualcomm Mobile branding as being those in the 200 tier.

Qualcomm changing its strategy

Back then, the company said that the word “processor” doesn’t truly reflect the nature and possibilities of this technology. In the same way that the Snapdragon is not simply a CPU. It’s an extremely important part of technology that includes both software and hardware, as well as services. It’s also worth noting that the company is also making those bold changes as its president, Derek Aberle, is preparing to step down from his post at the end of this year.
