Apple seeks $22 million attorney fees from Samsung in new motion document

The new court documents reveals that Apple has spent $60 million to its legal battle against the Samsung in patent related lawsuits in 2012 and seeks a total of $22 million reimbursement from Samsung.

The news come from the legal court documents regarding the Cupertino’s seek of compensations from Samsung in a new lawsuit, in which Apple states that Samsung has to pay $15.7 million in attorney’s fees as well as over $6.2 million in trial-related costs.

According to the document’s “parameters”, Apple has paid or expect to pay around $60 million to the law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP and $2 million to the law firm Wilmer Hale an the company says that these fees included after the reductions based on the long term relationships between the Apple and the law firms.

Rachel Krevans, the attorney behind the filings wrote,

“Apple’s in-house attorneys managed this case to a very disciplined budget. For purposes of this motion, Apple included only the fees it incurred for timekeepers who billed more than $100,000.”

The filings related to the above said trial-related costs includes discovery expenses, translators, cost of making copies and  various kind of transcriptions and it is stated here (pdf). Apple also shows some more light on the $6.2 million expenses, which only adds a) Fees for printed or electronically recorded transcripts necessarily obtained for use in the case, b) fees for exemplification and the costs of making copies of any materials where the copies are and necessarily obtained for use in the case c) compensation of interpreters and costs of special interpretation services under 28 U.S.C. 1828. The filing is in this bill of costs document (pdf).

The ruling has yet to be done by the judge Lucy Koh on the firm’s motion for attorney’s fees but looking at the early this year’s ruling regarding the Apple vs Samsung’s patent infringement case that said that the latter one didn’t willfully infringed the first one’s patents – we can say that Apple will not going to win those $22 million claims. However, the latter one already has to pay more than $900 million for patent infringement ordered by court judgement, the attorney fees seems to be negligible for both Apple and Samsung.

But, for the sake of publicity or status or real need, Apple vs Samsung seems to be the continuing saga over few more years. Stay tuned for more updates.
