Sega came at the SXSW 2017, as it promised, and made some interesting announcements about two of their upcoming video games. And they both have Sonic, the blue hedgehog, as their central character. One is the classic collection called Sonic Mania and the other one was the previously untitled Project Sonic 2017. However, not both of those announcements excited the public, because one of the games has reportedly been delayed.

Sonic Mania delayed

The classic collection titled Sonic Mania was initially supposed to come out this spring. Unfortunately, Sega announced that they will delay the release of the game until this summer. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka was the one who shed some light on this announcement which made many Sonic fans sad. According to him, the only reason for this delay is the fact that Sega wants to focus on the quality factor of the game. They wish to offer the best experience possible, so they decided to take some more time to make an almost perfect game.

What is Sonic Mania all about? This classic collection will bring back memories as it is a 2D side-scrolling game, much like the ones from the Sega Genesis. The game will reportedly have 16 stages, all of which have been reworked. It will also come with new levels, new bosses to fight, and some new cool moves which will make Sonic the blue hedgehog come back into the spotlight. Fans were sad following this announcement because during the SXSW, Sega also revealed a new level called The Flying Battery Zone. It offered a glimpse into the game’s new mechanics and overall feeling, through a gameplay trailer. This made them even more excited for the game’s release. Sonic Mania will come out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Sonic will also have his two trusted companions with him: Knuckles and Tails.

Project Sonic 2017 becomes Sonic Forces

As for the previously untiled Project Sonic 2017, it now has a brand new name: Sonic Forces. Sega first announced this game last year. The first teaser trailer for it offered an insight into what the new game will be like. Fans immediately noticed the different atmosphere and direction the game is going for. Sonic is still the same lovable blue hedgehog, but this time, he is running through vast ruins. The world has apparently been taken over by giant robots. The players will need to “join the resistance”, as the trailer is encouraging them to, and help Sonic fight those new threats.

On March 17, Sega will release the first gameplay trailer for Sonic Forces. According to some rumors, it will show fans the multiple ways in which a level can be completed. Apart from that, we will see a glimpse of the two new gameplay styles. One is said to be completely unexpected, while the other supposedly resembles the classic style of the old Sonic games. The game will also run on the new The Hedgehog Engine 2. This is a brand new game engine. Sonic Forces will come out around the holiday season on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
