A recent report from well-informed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Quo says that Apple is planning to reveal three new iPad models in the first half of this year. One of these models will most probably have a narrow bezel. The models will also come in three different sizes: 9.7-inches, 12.9-inches and 10-10.5-inches.
Three new iPads from Apple
In the report, Quo says that the 12.9-inch model will only be the second generation of the iPad Pro, in the same size. The 9.7-inch version will reportedly the one with the lowest price while the 10-10.5-inch one will be the high class one with the long anticipated narrow bezel. Actually, this announcement is not really that surprising considering that there have been numerous rumors about a 10.5-inch iPad. It is also not surprising that this will be the high-end one, because many expected it.
However, it will be very interesting to see if Apple will give up on the Home button on these iPads too. If the Home button is disposable on any Apple device, it is disposable on the iPad for sure. Users will not have trouble using the tablet without it, unlike the iPhone. Also, the iPad has that finger pinch which instantly brings the user back to the home screen. So, such a button can really disappear. Still, Home button aside, the narrow bezel idea seems the most intriguing. If you look now at the current iPads on the market you will notice a pretty wide bezel which could easily be narrowed down. So, the new model will most probably look like the 9.7-inch iPad Air and iPad Pro, in what concerns the amount of bezel on the tablet.
What does “low price” mean for Apple?
Quo says something very interesting in his report. That the 9.7-inch iPad model is going to be the one with the lowest price. Considering that the iPad Air 2’s current starting price is $399, how low could the price for the 9.7-model be? If they do it, the move might attract a myriad of new clients because the iPad is undeniably the best tablet on the market right now. And with a price so low, people will want to get their hands on it. It will not matter that it will maybe not be as good as the other two models. Not very good is still quite good in Apple terms.
However, some are saying that Apple is not doing a very good job at telling apart their tablets. The problem here is that the company is planning to release more tablets which are pretty much phone-sized. This might make it difficult for users to decide what device to buy or which one is right for their particular needs. The iPhone Plus has surpassed in popularity the 7.9-inch iPad Mini. Still, the difference between the iPad Pro and the iPad Air 2, both at 7.9-inch, is minimal. This is the main problem here. Too much of the same and people might get sick.
We will see if these rumors will prove to be true after all. Ming-Chi Quo rarely gets it wrong, so most probably he did not get it wrong this time either.
