Last night, the Game Awards 2016 took place and one game took home the most awards, including the prestigious Game of the Year award. It was the multiplayer shooter “Overwatch”. Unsurprisingly to be honest, because of you payed attention to the recent Golden Joystick ceremony, you may have anticipated this course of events.
Overwatch was the big winner
Apart from the Game of the Year award, “Overwatch” also took home three other prizes including Best Multiplayer Game, Best eSports Game and Best Studio for Blizzard. Apart from the big winner of the night, there were also some pretty interesting winners. For example, “Doom” took home the award for Best Sound Design and Best Action Game. “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s end” won the awards for Best Narrative and Best Performance for Nolan North’s Nathan Drake. A nice surprise was the winner of the Best Independent Game category, the amazing “Inside”. The game also won the Best Art Direction award.
Unsurprisingly, the Best Mobile/Handheld award along with Best Family Game went to “Pokemon GO” while the Best Action/Adventure award went to “Dishonored 2”. A very well deserved distinction was awarded to “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt- Blood and Wine”. The game won Best RPG. “Civilization 6” took home the Best Strategy Game Award, fully deserved. Best Racing/Sport Game award was won by “Forza Horizon 3”, making some fans angry. According to them, it did not deserve the award. Boogie2988 was named Trending Gamer and awarded his prize.
News, trailers and good games
As for the news that came out of the award show and the trailers, very interesting was the one for the mysterious game “Death Stranding”. The game marks Hideo Kojima’s first attempt after splitting from Konami. This was actually the second trailer for the game which frankly nobody knows what it is about. The first one starred actor Norman Reedus and a baby who was vanishing. This one is just as bizarre. In it, we can see famous director Guillermo del Toro hiding yet another baby from some creepy soldiers. Famous actor Mads Mikkelsen also shows up in the trailer.
Another interesting trailer was the gameplay one for the new “Mass Effect: Andromeda”. Critics are already over the moon and they are saying that it looks amazing. The Most Anticipated Game Award went to “Legend of Zelda” Breath of the Wild”. It beat the likes of some maybe bigger games like “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “Mass Effect Andromeda”. New footage from the game along with a new trailer debuted during the Awards’ pre-show. “Prey” also debuted a new trailer which looks maybe a little bit too similar to “Bioshock”. Still, this does not mean that it is a bad thing.
All in all, this year’s Game Awards had some expected winners along with some welcomed surprises. Of course there were some complaints, as many people were disappointed that “Uncharted 4” did not win more awards. Still, the show was very entertaining and rewarded the best in the industry, from games to studios and voice actors.
