Samsung appears to be planning something big regarding their new and improved artificial intelligence assistant. The Wall Street Journal reports that the South Korean giant is planning to introduce it to the world with their future Galaxy S8 smartphones. Also, they want to incorporate a button especially designed to access your virtual helper. They will reportedly place this button on the edge of the device.
The acquisition of Viv Labs
Another report from Reuters this time said that Samsung will also introduce the assistant their other devices and appliances. Let’s remember that earlier this year, the company bought Viv Labs, which are responsible for the creation of Apple’s Siri assistant. So it is safe to assume that they will base this new artificial intelligence assistant on that technology. But they will improve it greatly.
Samsung is yet to make any announcement regarding this matter. The only thing they mentioned is that the new and improved assistant will be very different from any other on the market right now. Samsung executive vice president Rhee Injong said that people will be able to attach services to the artificial intelligence agent, making it smarter and more efficient.
Samsung’s acquisition of Viv Labs might prove that the company has big ambitions in the artificial intelligence area. And as the market for digital assistants is continuously growing, now there is a good time to tuck in. Until now, Samsung has not been very active in this field, dominated by Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa. Samsung’s S Voice assistant has not been revamped. Considering it is four years old, this might be the best time to do it. Considering that their rivals have been pouring money into the development of assistants which can order food or answer calls, Samsung is in a delicate position. They have not done anything in this direction, so the fear of falling behind is real, especially after the Note 7 mess.
Fans might have to wait longer
But the new Galaxy S8 device might get a later release date. Usually, the company has revealed their launches at the Mobile World Congress show, which takes place in February. But now, it seems like this will not be the case. Samsung is reportedly waiting until April to unveil the Galaxy S8 smartphone. And there is a good reason for this. The Note 7 disaster cost them billions and left many people disappointed. So now, they would want to make sure that everything is in order. Even if a spokesman for Samsung has declined any chance to comment on the situation, rumor has it that it is all true.
So they are taking their time to check the device and to ensure the users that the new phones will not be catching fire. After all, the company still does not know the exact cause of the fiasco and why were the phones exploding. And because those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, Samsung is taking the right path. It seems they are learning from the past after all.
