Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 is a new solution to the ever-present problem of dropping our phones. The Gorilla Glass is the top display choice for most smartphone manufacturers out there. The company has been leading the glass cover glass industry for over 10 years now. Gorilla Glass 4 has been protecting our devices long enough. Now, it’s time to step it up.
A recent global study has shown that about 85 percent of smartphone owners had their phones fall to the ground at least once per year. Gorilla Glass comes to the rescue once more. Corning has unveiled the new Glass 5 on July 20, noting that the “new flagship cover glass takes tough to new heights”.
This unique glass has been specially manufactured to improve drop performance, but it is still prone to shattering, although it works wonders at resisting scratches. Corning worked to provide extra protection against drops, and it is now higher than ever. The company claims that Gorilla Glass 5 can survive a 1.6-meter drops onto rough floors up to 80 percent of the time. This means that Glass 5 is about four times more efficient at protecting your phone from shoulder height drops than competitive glasses.
This means that you are now free to go on adventures with your phone without having to worry about it falling apart. Basically, be clumsy all you want. If it slips from hands, there are little chances your display will break. Trying to snap a selfie but you failed wonderfully by dropping it on the ground? Pick it up; it should be fine. Well, at least we hope.
The tougher Gorilla Glass 5 provides the same excellent touch sensitivity, optical clarity, and damage resistance. This means that you can swipe all you want, view crisp and clear videos and photos on your display, and still be protected in case of accidents. The company has not revealed details about the test conducted on the glass.
According to Corning data, the Gorilla Glass has been incorporated into over 4.5 billion devices all across the globe. This also means a 73 percent smartphone penetration worldwide. “Its damage resistance helps devices withstand everyday wear and tear. Its scratch resistance is superior to plastic and other competitive glasses,” according to the company.
