Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will be delivered in a special limited edition to Rio 2016 Olympians, according to a recent announcement. The company is a long-time sponsor of the Olympics and has provided athletes with phones ever since 1998.
And there’s more. Along with the impressive offering, Samsung has also launched the Rio 2016 app. The app will provide information on the torch relay schedule, a list of torchbearers, route maps, celebrations and parties associated with the event, and many other useful details which might be of interest to both competitors and fans.
Up to 12,500 Samsung Galaxy S7 edge limited edition smartphones and Gear IconX earbuds will be given to the Rio Olympians this year as a way to “enhance their experiences in Rio and communicate with family and friends around the world more conveniently”, Samsung reports.
Although Samsung devices have been offered in the past years as well, it is the first time when the company has incorporated the Olympic Games design into the smartphone. Although the hardware is identical in both the Olympics edition and the standard model, Samsung has played a bit with the external look and the software. The limited edition Galaxy S7 edge packs a custom colorway pattern that includes the five colors of the Olympics. The colors will be prominent in the S7’s UI as well, including the contact screens, dial, messages, and notification bar. Themed wallpapers are, as expected, available.
Athletes will not only be given the Galaxy S7 edge but the newest Samsung phone accessory – the cord-free earbuds named Gear IconX. These smart earbuds have a heart rate monitor incorporated in them, as well as a stand-alone music player. And with the help of the S Health app, Olympians can pair their new smartphone and the earbuds to track fitness updates.
Fans and consumers can also get their hands on the limited edition S7. The company has manufactured 2,016 smartphones for the consumer market. Beginning July 18th, you can find phones in selected countries, such as the United States, Brazil, Germany, and China.
“Samsung admires the spirit of Olympians and fans across the globe who continuously push boundaries for the better,” says Younghee Lee, Executive VP of Global Marketing, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.
