Google Now Lets Users Personalize Ads


Google now lets users personalize ads on the Web, giving them the option of blocking certain advertisements. People will now have a free hand in choosing what they see online with the new privacy update.

If choosing to turn on Ads Personalization, you will give Google permission to use your account activity and information, as well as browsing data. But the good news is that it is all in your best interest, as Google will then show you only relevant ads, along with improved relevance of ads on the website you visit and in the apps you use. The setting applies to all devices and all Google services, as long as you are signed into your account. Turning Ads Personalization on or off can be easily done by checking or unchecking the box.

This new update joins the company’s new “My Activity” page. “My Activity” gather all user search history, visited pages, and videos watched. All these “feed” the ads we see, but Google now lets users personalize ads, and we can trim advertising to our own liking. Don’t expect to make use of all the offerings just yet. Google will roll out the new settings over time, but it promises to refrain from sharing user data.

While it is impossible to remove ads completely, users can at least remove the unwanted ones. You can block content from advertisers on Google Search, Gmail, Maps, and YouTube.

To block an ad on Google search, this can be done by signing into the Google Account, going to the arrow icon next to the page URL on the PC, or tapping the info icon next to a set of ads on the smartphone. Then, select the “Why This Ad page”, and then “Block this advertiser”.

On YouTube and Gmail, users also need to be logged into their accounts, and then click or tap the info icon, and choose either “Stop seeing this ad” on YouTube, or “Block this advertiser” on Gmail.

While Google now lets users personalize ads, it also warns that blocking a certain ad won’t necessarily block all of the advertiser’s ads. Some advertisers use more than one website to promote itself, so users might still come across ads from the same company until blocking all of its websites.
