Volkswagen (VLKAY) recalls 420,000 vehicles over possible airbag deploy issue


Volkswagen AG S/ADR (NASDAQ:VLKAY) announced that it is recalling around 420,000 vehicles in the United States, due to the problem in the airbags, which prevents them from deploying in a crash.volkswagen-emblem-office

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) said on Friday that, during an accident the debris might cut the power cable that power airbag of the vehicle. This might lead to failure in deploying air bag during the crash. The agency added that, there were almost nine complaints were registered, and fortunately no accidents have been reported due to this issue.

The company posted on its official blog as,

Volkswagen considers the safety and satisfaction of its consumers and passengers a top priority. As such, Volkswagen of America today notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will be issuing a voluntary safety recall affecting the steering wheel clock spring on approximately 420,000 Volkswagen vehicles in the U.S.

The list of cars, which are subjected to recall are,

  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen CC
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Eos
  • Certain 2011-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Golf/GTI
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta
  • Certain 2011-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • Certain 2010 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (German Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (U.S. Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Tiguan

The company mentioned that, still its developing the fine solution for the issue and the customers will be notified the schedule for the recall.  It also mentioned that, if anyone see the airbag system light to be illuminated, then they need to immediately contact the nearest dealers to have the vehicle repaired.

The automaker company made a filing in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that 420,000 vehicles are subjected to the recall. The company also mentioned that, this problem is not related to the “ongoing Takata air-bag”, which is currently encompassed with 11 vehicle manufacturers. Since Volkswagen doesn’t use Takata airbags, they are not listed in those recalls. But it is facing airbag problem for their own airbag itself.
