G seems a trademark of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), the company chief executive Larry Page has mentioned that G is for Google in company official blog and also introduces new parent entity group Alphabet. Google is one of the top most valuable as well as most reached brands in this world. According to the internet survey done by Forbes, Google ranks third position after Apple and Microsoft.
The company is consistently making efforts to make its brand more popular. In fact, the popularity of Google makes it to enter in mainstream English usage and people often started to use it as a verb (to Google). For newly created parent entity by Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin have offered the name as Alphabet, and it is already the name for BMW subsidiary (Copyright BMW AG and/or Alphabet International GmbH, München, Deutschland.), which offers services to the “corporations with vehicle fleets”.
In the meanwhile, most of the companies such as Aspirin, Thermos and other companies lost their trademark, when they entered into mainstream English. But, the companies which follow “100 percent of the way to genericization” such as Band-Aid (Johnson & Johnson) are still protected by trademark status.
The company said,
“While we’re pleased that so many people think of us when they think of searching the web, let’s face it, we do have a brand to protect, so we’d like to make clear that you should please only use ‘Google’ when you’re actually referring to Google Inc. and our services,”
In the meanwhile, Laura Heymann, a professor at William and Mary Law School and author of “The Grammar of Trademarks, mentioned in a review article as,
“It’s possible for people both to say ‘Let me google that’ and to recognize that ‘Google’ is a search engine provided by a single company. If you asked someone to sit at a computer and ‘go to Google,’ I’m guessing that almost no one would open Bing or another search engine. Google is no doubt working very hard to prevent that from happening.”
A Google spokeswoman declined to comment regarding that the name change was mainly due to the linguistic concerns and Mr. Page has mentioned that, the main motive of the Alphabet companies is to develop their own brands and also they want 100% independence to act on their own. At the same time, when Google announces the Alphabet announcement, Google shares rallied around 7 percent within a few hours of time of announcement.
On the other hand, BMW is analyzing whether any sort of trademark infringement has been occurring and also according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, infringement occur only if another company creates confusion among the consumers with its products and services.
