Google to act swiftly on revenge porn by blocking in search results

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) will protect victims of revenge-porn by removing images and web-links from search results. Victims will have to request the removal through an online form for removal of links that are causing public humiliation.google

Senior vice president of Google Search Amit Singhal stated on Friday in a blog post that Google will accept requests to take down nude or sexually explicit images from search results. Revenge porn – posting private explicit photos by ex-male partners on the Internet has become a major problem in the recent months. However, Google has mentioned that the action will be ‘narrow and limited.’ Popular revenge porn sites will not be blocked from the search results, only individual images.

“Revenge-porn images are intensely personal and emotionally damaging, and serve only to degrade victims – predominantly women,” wrote Singhal.

Google’s new policy comes after several requests from victims facing public humiliation. The new decision has been hailed by victims and supporters, though some added that revenge porn posters should be subject to criminal charges. Google has been known to display as much content as possible in the search-results, but it also blocks certain sensitive personal information. Singhal mentioned that the new policy is similar to what Google does with bank-signatures and account numbers. Google said:

Our philosophy has always been that Search should reflect the whole web. But revenge porn images are intensely personal and emotionally damaging, and serve only to degrade the victims—predominantly women. So going forward, we’ll honor requests from people to remove nude or sexually explicit images shared without their consent from Google Search results. This is a narrow and limited policy, similar to how we treat removal requests for other highly sensitive personal information, such as bank account numbers and signatures, that may surface in our search results.

Though revenge-porn images from websites would not be blocked, Google claims that blocking search-results would help. In February, Reddit updated its revenge-porn policy, and Facebook and Google banned it in March. Democratic California Congresswoman Jackie Speier stated that there is still a gaping hole in the law that leaves victims with little or no recourse. Speier added that the people are already punished for the authorized disclosure of medical records and identifiers — Why should personal images of one’s body, given in confidence, be any different?
