California coastline under Tsunami threat

The geologists have sounded the alarm bells for coast of Southern California owing to the discovery of a fault zone. The new discovered fault zone, which is just a few miles away from the Southern California, can lead to an outright disaster for the coastal cities of Los Angeles and San Diego. Well, if the fault line was expected to bring in an Earthquake, things would not have been so serious.267E3FE300000578-0-image-m-25_1425980215356

Instead, the fault lines go underwater and with quakes along the coastline at about 8.0 Richter scale, huge waves will be  sent towards the cities causing mass destruction along the coast.

According to the study released last week in the Journal of Geophysical Research, there have been a few changes on the crust along the fault lines of the California Continental Borderland and Santa Cruz Catalina Ridge fault.  Multiple evidences show that there are many segments along a length of 100 kms, which could experience a rupture at any point of time.

According to the researchers, the situation is such that at any point of time, we could be watching at fairly high scaled earthquakes owing to the struggle going on between the North American Tectonic Plate and the Pacific Tectonic Plate.

The researchers have added that there is nothing that can be done to prevent the tectonic plates from moving, but we can certainly help the coastal cities by providing them with the predictions with regard to earthquakes along the fault lines and the potentially catastrophic tsunamis.

With more efficient study of the ocean floor, the researchers could make more efficient and timely predictions regarding Tsunami. The local residents have been advised not to panic, but stay prepared for the Tsunami threat that hangs on Los Angeles and San Diego.
