The Outlook app which is in preview mode for Android and iOS is quite different from the desktop versions of Outlook.com, the email service of Microsoft. The design is also different from the web app version of Outlook which is used mainly by Office 365 and Exchange users. Al Hilwa, IDC analyst stated that an increasing number of users are using the products across multiple devices and it will be valuable for them to move across platforms with the same tools.

However, the app does not support all the feature of Outlook on Windows. The service was acquired by Microsoft last December during the buyout of mobile developer Accompli. Th company admitted that the app did lack full support for Exchange ActiveSync administrative tools and the ability to wipe an entire phone in case its lost or stolen. However the app supports remote-wipe feature of email and attachments.

The Outlook app has received enough praise from users with and Joanna Stern from The Wall Street journal called the app’s mail integration and calender functions a freedom. The app does have minor bugs like connecting to hosted Exchange accounts though it performs smooth Calender sync from Gmail, iCloud and Yahoo.

Users are lauding the effoers put in by the company for the preview version and the Outlook app could definitely become a way for the company’s revenue generation. A Microsoft spokeswoman mentioned that the company’s aim was to make customers more productive, no matter their location or device. The latest move indicates Microsoft’s strategy to build more cross-platform mobile apps in the future.
