An Unusual Dimming Quasar Discovered by Yale Researchers


For the first time ever, researchers have noticed a quasar moving into a dimmer state. According to the researchers, this could provide them minute details about the galactic phenomenon life cycle.dimming-quasar

The quasars are actually concentrated in a small area, but they can easily outshine our galaxy with growth factor of 100. They can generate more energy than the sun itself. They collect power through a simple mechanism though.

According to an age old theory, the quasars are believed to have a black hole that has been turbocharged. However, a contradiction has been found out by the researchers of Yale University according to which they found a quasar that is dimming.

The professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Yale, Megan Urry stated, “We’ve looked at hundreds of thousands of quasars at this point, and now we’ve found one that has switched off. This may tell us something about their lifetimes.”

This dimming quasar was found accidentally by one of the researchers. Upon studying the data of quasars, it was found out that broad emission lines of quasar dramatically weakened. The quasar was consuming lesser matter than before. In addition to it, the broad emission lines also faded away overnight.

According to LaMassa, “This is like a dimmer switch. The power source just went dim. Because the life cycle of a quasar is one of the big unknowns, catching one as it changes, within a human lifetime, is amazing.”

The researchers are anxious to know more about this matter and bring out some important info related to quasars. This will definitely aid them in their study about quasars. All the findings have been published in the Astrophysical journal.
