Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) recently introduced the “Year in Review” app that collects all your pictures and important info from the year and scotches them together as a narrative for the year 2014. You must have scrolled through the same app on facebook an ample of times where your friends’ year has been reviewed by Facebook.
The review app is actually not appreciated by many people over Facebook and has been criticized by critics and users alike. According to the Washington Post, “The posts are slickly designed, even if their visual uniformity can make scrolling through a news feed of the digital holiday letters a bit grating. However, in some cases the summaries can go beyond irritating and become downright cruel.”
An ample of experts are joining the likes of Washington Post and criticizing Facebook’s review app openly. Eric Meyer, a web designer and a writer lost his daughter when she was 6 years old. This happened in the year 2014 and when he opened Facebook, he found out that the review app on Facebook has featured a picture of her smiling.
Meyer expressed his discontent over the review app and wrote in a blog post titled “Inadvertent Algorithmic Cruelty”, “I didn’t go looking for grief this afternoon, but it found me anyway, and I have designers and programmers to thank for it. In this case, the designers and programmers are somewhere at Facebook. To show me Rebecca’s face and say ‘Here’s what your year looked like!’ is jarring. It feels wrong, and coming from an actual person, it would be wrong.”
The product manager of Facebook, Jonathan Gheller has apologized to the fans about the review app and he has accepted that the app did not go well with the users. He also expressed condolences for Mr. Meyers and his loss.
