Boeing teams up with BlackBerry for a smartphone that self destructs

After unveiling its modular secure Android smartphone in February, the world’s largest aerospace company Boeing (NASDAQ:BA) has announced a new self destructing Boeing Black phone partnering with BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY)  to provide secure mobile experience to its users.boeing-black-smartphone

For the bare eyes, the device just looks like any other ordinary Android phone, but the handset will securely encrypt calls/messages and have the ability to self destruct if tampered with. The company targets users from government agencies and high-level business executives to provide the secure environment.

The device was announced in February 2014, but the partnership with BlackBerry for its BES12 platform technology has been announced recently. Hence, it’s clear that after losing most of its commercial user-base, BlackBerry is looking for the opportunities in the government base. On the other side, Boeing Company is also opting into the software development segment after having slow sales in its traditional military hardware for the US amid Pentagon budget cuts.

CEO of BlackBerry, John Chen has said that, “We’re pleased to announce that Boeing is collaborating with BlackBerry to provide a secure mobile solution for Android devices utilizing our BES 12 platform. That, by the way, is all they allow me to say.”

Boeing is testing its “Black” modular Android smartphone with BlackBerry’s BES (Business Enterprise Server) software that keeps track of either the devices of government employees or large corporations. BES12 is also compatible with Android and iOS devices. According to the reports, Boeing Black will be having a dual-SIM option and the device will be able to connect with satellites as well as biometric sensors.

Andy Lee, a Boeing spokesman, said:

“Boeing has decades of experience providing defense and security customers with secure communications. We are working with BlackBerry to help them ensure the BES12 operating system is compatible with, and optimized for use by, the ultra-secure mobile devices favored by the defense and the security community.”

Regarding the specifications, it comes with pretty nice configurations. The dual SIM Boeing Black is a 4.3-inch smartphone with a qHD display screen, 1.2GHz dual-core ARM processor, 512MB of RAM, micro SD card slot, 1,590mAh battery and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR. The Android version of the handset is not specified yet.
