Activision has announced that the world’s most popular first-person shooter video game franchise of the decade Call of Duty has overall grossed $10 billion in revenue to its publisher. Activision’s Call of Duty series has seen 14 franchises so far, since its debut in 2003.
The game rose to the fame when the company launched its most successful game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. The franchises before Modern Warfare featured the campaign related to World War I and World War II, but this 2007’s release comes out of the box campaigns that helped the company to achieve more sales of the game.
Along with the golden days, Activision has also seen some bitter days as well. When Activision launched Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts in November 2013, Activision had to face severe criticism from its loyal fans and gamers regarding the not-so-active single player campaigns and minimal upgrades on multiplayer games from its predecessor. Moreover, the bugs and glitches of CoD: Ghosts when the game has been launched to make it worse. But, the gamers (especially in PCs) managed to find resolutions themselves with many settings and features that were not provided by Infinity Ward.
The very recent game release was Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which was released in November 3, 2014. According to the developers of the game, Advanced Warfare begins 40 years in the future, which allows the developers to create and add more futuristic weapons, features and rewards.
According to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has set a new record in terms of revenue, sales and popularity in front of all new music, movie, game and book launched in 2014. Activision has also stated that the game’s revenue has so far crossed that of Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers: Age of Extinction movies as well as Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. However, Activision refrained itself from releasing the exact sales/revenue numbers.
Although the Call of Duty franchise wears the crown of having largest franchises in terms of revenue, Nintendo’s Mario and Final Fantasy series is so far the largest game franchises in terms of overall sales. The Sims and Grand Theft Auto series are the two franchises whose sales-per-launch is higher than any other games.
