Technology has been evolving for generations and improving leaps and bounds to say the least. The newest innovation that has surprised the world is in the form of airless tires. Michelin has now set up world’s first manufacturing plant for airless tires in North America. It will produce the new airless tires called Michelin TWEEL. They will be used for commercial applications.
The idea struck Michelin research engineers in the US. The TWEEL is basically a non-pneumatic tire that is not any way similar to a conventional tire. The tire and the wheel assembly are brought together to make one solid unit in the form of TWEEL.
Ralph Dimenna, head of Michelin Tweel Technologies, said in a statement:
“Differentiating us from competitors, the TWEEL airless radial tire is the industry’s first commercialized airless radial solution and verifies Michelin’s leadership for the next generation of mobility. The TWEEL airless radial tire enables Michelin to enter new markets and expand its reach in existing business segments within the low-speed application category. The industry is hungry for solutions contributing to productivity, safety and bottom lines. Serving our customers is at the center of our strategy for success.”
Let us explain TWEEL configuration with detailed view. It consists of a rigid hub that is attached to a shear beam through flexible spokes; all of which function as a single unit. TWEEL will not have any air in them and it will solve the problems faced by chronic flat tires when it comes to landscape, construction, recycling and agricultural industries.
According to the North America chairman and president of Michelin, Pete Selleck, “The TWEEL being built here in South Carolina is yet another dramatic example of Michelin’s long-standing commitment to breakthrough innovation. The TWEEL concept was born at Michelin Americas Research Company in Greenville, S.C., one of Michelin’s three global technology centers, and now the Tweel will be manufactured right here in the Greenville area to satisfy a growing commercial market.”
The leadership within the company is very eager to introduce the new age tires to the world. In this perspective, the head of Michelin Tweel technologies, Ralph Dimenna stated “Differentiating us from competitors, the TWEEL airless radial tire is the industry’s first commercialized airless radial solution and verifies Michelin’s leadership for the next generation of mobility.”
The new manufacturing unit set up by Michelin for the TWEEL tires is situated in South Carolina and it is the company’s 16th manufacturing unit in the US. An approximate amount of $50 million is expected to be invested in the new plant.
