With the latest Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet, Google also launched the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. And with the new firmware update, Google also tried a new approach to improve the wonky SMS capabilities of its Hangouts app, by releasing a standalone texting app – Google Messenger.google-messenger-app-screenshot

We had the information about the new standalone texting app via the extraction of the leaked Lollipop build’s code, last month. Google Messenger comes as a default application in Google Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices, replacing Google Hangouts app in the apps list shown by default on the homescreen.

Now anyone can install Google Messenger app on their smartphones or tablets running Android 4.1 Jellybean or later version of the software. As Android Lollipop is mostly a Material Design firmware, this application has also built under the same Material Design. The layout looks very simplistic and it can lure many users to keep on using the application as their default texting app. It’s still unclear, whether Google will remove the SMS functions added to its Hangouts app or not. But, on Android Lollipop, Google Messenger is the default SMS app.

Now that Google Messenger supports emoji, audio, image and videos along with the basic texting features like SMS and MMS, the company’s aim is very clear – to tackle WhatsApp slowly. Earlier in October, there were many rumors surfaced regarding Google’s own WhatsApp-like messenger application, this is it. To know what this app does, check out their official features:

  • Faster sharing: Select or take pictures and videos directly from the app and share easily. You can even send audio messages to your contacts.
  • Easy search: Search through contacts and conversation threads to find exactly what you are looking for.
  • Purposeful design: New, fluid, material design that is intuitive and delightful.
  • More control: Ability to block SMS senders. No interruptions when you don’t want them!
  • More features: audio messages, emoji support, colored text threads, message archiving and more.
