Women, Action and the Media, also known as WAM, have now partnered with Twitter to study and curb the sexual harassment faced by the women in their microblogging service. In 2013, the same group has organized the #FBrape campaign, along with the Everyday Sexism Project and author-activist Soraya Chemaly and compelled Facebook to change its policy on posting of “cruel and insensitive content” on the largest social network.
Formed by women rights activists, WAM have been trying their best to protect the women’s rights in the virtual world, especially in social media. Now with their Harassment Reporting Tool, this Non Profit Organization has taken a huge step to curb sexual harassment (racist, transphobic, etc.) faced by women on Twitter too.
Harassment Reporting Tool by WAM is a simple online form where Twitter users can fill with their complaints or on behalf of someone else. With the help of this online form, online users can easily complain and provide details about any kind of harassments faced by women in the microblogging service, including impersonation, threats of violence, posting false information, releasing private information, hate speech (sexist, racist, homophobic, etc.), encouraging people to harass users via phone or other offline ways, nonconsensual photography or porn.
WAM said in a statement:
“WAM will escalate validated reports to Twitter and track Twitter’s response to different kinds of gendered harassment. At the end of the pilot test period, WAM will analyze the data collected and use it to work with Twitter to better understand how gendered harassment functions on their platform, and to improve their responses to it.”
WAM also said that it will analyze the complaints filed by the users and it will track the culprits for further actions. It will also make sure that the response of Twitter is prompted for the same.
“Women, Action and the Media” are now experimenting on whether Twitter will tackle this gendered harassment faced in their microblogging service or not. They will be sending the details gathered by the WAM Anti-Harassment Tool directly to Twitter and track the response received by them for each kind of harassment reports. And finally, WAM aims to analyze all the data received to collaborate with Twitter to find easy methods to curb the women harassment issues.
“We’re always trying to improve the way we handle abuse issues, and WAM is one of many organizations we work with around the world on best practices for user safety,” Twitter said.
