In a one hour session, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg answered a series of questions posted by users including the question on why he forced users to install the Facebook Messenger app. The CEO mentioned that the site would be mostly comprise of videos in the next five years though he did not reveal the company’s plans.
The event was attended by several Facebook users at the company’s headquarters in California. The CEO stated the company at present was handling the load caused by photos of users, though he admitted that handling rich video content was the real challenge. Zuckerberg said the “The Social Network” movie based on the development on Facebook differed from the actual reality. The 32-year old CEO claimed that he was already with his wife during the development of the site while the movie showed him being rejected by a girl. He added that certain scenes did hurt him.
Regarding the Messenger app the CEO admitted that it was a ‘big ask’ to users to download the app, but promised to deliver a better experience in the future. As users expected a not-so-serious answer from Zuckerberg on why he was wearing a gray T-shirt everyday he stated that he does not wish to waste his time on silly things. On saying this, he also added that Steve Jobs also wear uniforms as black turtleneck. He also added that, Facebook is becoming a hub for encouraging entrepreneurship and it helps others to start their own business. With the help of Facebook, people start to promote their stuffs globally and it helps them to gain more audiences. He mentioned that the aim of the company was to make the site more useful and not cool and exiting in reply to a user’s question on why it was so cluttered and boring.
Mark Zuckerberg answered to a question on Facebook Messenger’s forced downloads:
“I’m grateful for hard questions. It keeps us honest. We need to be able to explain clearly why what we’re thinking is good. Asking everyone in our community to install a new app is a big ask. I appreciate that that was work and required friction. We wanted to do this because we believe that this is a better experience. Messaging is becoming increasingly important. On mobile, each app can only focus on doing one thing well, we think.”
“The primary purpose of the Facebook app is News Feed. Messaging was this behavior people were doing more and more. 10 billion messages are sent per day, but in order to get to it you had to wait for the app to load and go to a separate tab. We saw that the top messaging apps people were using were their own app. These apps that are fast and just focused on messaging. You’re probably messaging people 15 times per day. Having to go into an app and take a bunch of steps to get to messaging is a lot of friction.”
Zuckerberg said he was not a cool person and has never tried to be cool as he answered certain questions from event attendees. After one hour the event was taken over by Sheryl Sandberg, Chief operating officer. The company’s plans on bringing video to the site is expected to change the way users use the app in mobile devices.
